When words do not convince Yeong-hye enough, her family resorts to physical measures, exacerbating her already fragile mental state. As her body increasingly grows limp-her “complexion resembled that of a hospital patient”-Yeong-hye’s family attempts to convince her to start eating meat again. Giving up meat in such an abrupt fashion worries her husband, along with her Yeong-hye’s parents and siblings. The Vegetarian follows the story of a South Korean woman, Yeong-hye, who decides to become a vegetarian after having a series of disturbing dreams about meat. But upon seeing the translated version of The Vegetarian on numerous bestselling lists and receiving critical acclaim, I finally decided that the novel, written by Han Kang and translated from Korean, might be a good place to start studying my own culture through a literary lens. I lost a large chunk of my ability to read Korean quickly enough to actually experience a book in the language and thus never had the chance to explore the Korean literary canon. As a native speaker of the language who has lived in the United States for over a decade, I can say this with modest shame, but I can’t help but feel guilty. I’ve never read a book written in the Korean language.

The author identifies herself as a "latecomer to feminism" (p.vii), and her book is meant to serve as an introduction to the subject designed to prevent such a late arrival for its younger audience. In her relatively short text, Rory Dicker targets this demographic with her explanation and clarification of the history of women's rights and women's movements in the United States. $12.95, ISBN 978-1-58005-234-4.įor the girls and women, myself included, who were born after the height of feminist political success in the 1960s and 1970s and the cultural backlash against those gains in the 1980s, the complicated cultural assumptions and norms produced by both movements seem as distant as Cold War standoffs, and yet their consequences shape our perceptions of self and our expectations and goals. 6/24/2023 0 Comments Doug moench shang chi1974), written by Mike Friedrich and inked by Jack Abel. She presents Ruff with an ultimatum: either train his unruly dog (in her class), or she will have Junior returned to the shelter. A pioneering exploration of the differences between the brain’s right and left hemispheres and their effects on society, history, and culture-“one of the few contemporary works deserving classic status” (Nicholas Shakespeare, Times, UK) “Persuasively argues that our society is suffering from the consequences of an over-dominant left hemisphere losing touch with its natural regulative ‘master’ the right. He delves into these conditions, both the ones before and after the Revolution and how it affected the people of the newly formed United States. He is not as interested in the complications of the day-to-day during the Revolution, but rather how did the society compare at the beginning and at the end, and most importantly, how did we get there. Rather, he spends the majority of the book discussing the before and after aspect of the Revolution. Wood does not spend much volume of his work recounting the events of the revolution itself- the battles, the strategies, the casualties. He delineates the changes in the hierarchy of society, between patricians and plebeians, patriarchal dependence, and political authority. Relationships are a key factor in many social upheavals, and Wood insists that this Revolution is no different, and certainly not lesser. Wood argues that the American Revolution was radical in the way of social change and in the transformation of relationships that bound people to each other. Many historians consider a true revolution to be one that turned the social and economic structure upside down, completely altering society. Wood challenges the notion that the American Revolution did not constitute a true “revolution”. In his 1993 Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Gordon S.
